Reflecting on the strength of Mississippians on the 17th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina
The City of Ocean Springs reflects on the strength of Mississippians to rebuild after damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The anniversary of Katrina brings back tragic memories of the hurricane ripping through the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
With storm surge peaking at nearly 30 feet, roads, homes, businesses and life looked unrecognizable.
At Fort Maurepas Park, Ocean Springs Mayor Kenny Holloway, Senator Roger Wicker, and Governor Tate Reeves spoke about the resilience of Mississippians to build back better and overcome such a catastrophic loss. “We saw strangers come together lend a helping hand, we saw people do more than even they thought they could do to help themselves and help their neighbor. We also saw the best of America because not only did we help ourselves, we also had thousands and thousands of people from all across this great country just show up and say what can I do to help.”
Representatives also thanked first responders for their fearless dedication and help in recovering Mississippi after the storm.
