Red snapper season to reopen next month
Red snapper season will reopen on August 13, 2021, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources announced Friday.
The season is open for private, recreational anglers and charter or for-hire vessels.
The projected close of the season will be midnight on September, 6, 2021. The season will close if the assigned quota (151,550 pounds) for recreational fishermen is reached at any point after the season opens.
Private recreational anglers may fish up to 200 nautical miles out. Charter boats can fish in state territorial waters, which is 9 nautical miles south of the barrier islands.
Anglers are restricted to 2 fish per person, per day and the fish must be a minimum of 16 inches in total length.
All fishing trips ventured with the intent of fishing for red snapper must be approved prior to departure through the MDMR’s Tails n’ Scales reporting system.
