Red Cross encouraging blood donations for critical low reserves-

The American Red Cross experienced a shortfall in blood and platelet donations last month.

They collected $26,000 fewer blood donations than needed to meet the needs of patients here in South Mississippi.

Denise Smith, the account manager for the Red Cross, emphasized the need for blood. The Red Cross encourages everyone to come out and donate June 14th to celebrate World Blood Donor Day. Anyone who donates this month will receive a $10 gift card and a chance to win a home theater.

Smith explains why the need is so critical. “When that need goes up and that supply goes down that’s not good for those patients who are in need and if we don’t have people coming out constantly and making those donations then when those patients need that blood it may not be ready for a transfusion that they need to save their lives.”

The Red Cross is holding their Media for Red Cross Blood Drives this month. It starts June 19th with blood drives in Ocean Springs and Pass Christian with five others to follow until June 23rd.

You can schedule a time to donate now at redcross.org.
