Record setting heartbreak for LSU Tigers

Back in 2009, LSU lost a game at Ole Miss due to poor clock management, coming up one second short at the Rebels’ five yard line.

Which brings us to Saturday when the officials put one second back on the clock at Texas A&M, turning a game that LSU had otherwise won in regulation into a record-setting seven-overtime loss.

The 74-72 defeat to the Aggies is not only the highest scoring affair in the history of the SEC, it’s the highest scoring game in the history of FBS football.

The seven overtime periods match the NCAA record, shared with four other games, but none of that is any consolation for the losing team, following a controversial finish at College Station to say the least. LSU Head Football Coach Ed Orgeron said, “We practice what we call winning, and we’ve been told with three seconds left you can’t kill it. And they tried to kill it and the clock ran down to zero. How they put another one second on the clock remains to be seen. But that’s one second, in my opinion, that should have never been put back. And that was very unfair that happened to our football team. These guys should have won ten games. These guys wanted it, these guys worked hard, they deserved it. That one second should have never been put on the clock, in my opinion.”

LSU ends the regular season in a second place tie in the SEC West with Texas A&M.
