Recent woods fires prompt fire safety reminder for Mississippi Gulf Coast residents

HARRISON COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)- As we head into fall, fire officials are reminding residents about the risk of wildfires.

A woods fire Sunday, along with several other recent fires, is keeping local fire crews busy and residents on alert.

Harrison County Fire Chief Pat Sullivan says there are several simple steps people can take to help prevent fires this fall.

That includes being careful with outdoor burning, making sure fires are completely extinguished, and clearing dry leaves, grass, and other flammable materials away from homes. “This time of year, as dry as it is the winds pick up, any type of fire that gets out of control is a danger. So, we’re asking people if they are going to burn be very, very careful. There’s not a burn ban in effect right now. We’re anticipating some rains coming this weekend. We need rain, we’re looking for rain. Unfortunately, it will probably be temporary and we could be right back to where we are where it dries out again and we have the high fire dangers.”
