Recent uptick in local scam reports

Since the start of the new year, it seems like there has been a drastic increase in scams making the rounds in South Mississippi.

In this day and age, scammers attempt to prey on unsuspecting victims in a variety of ways from making contact over social media sites like Facebook and Instagram to calling your cell phone.

Although police agencies tell people how to spot signs of a scammer, one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding these scams is why are they happening?

Sgt. Candace Young with the Biloxi Police Department has an answer to that question. “With technology, that’s something that just comes along with advances in technology. AI is a new concern we have to worry about. As tech increases, you could see more attempts to scam people.”

Sgt. Young adds that if you are a victim of a scam, you should call your banking institution or credit card company as soon as possible and cancel any affected cards.
