Rebuilding job corps site in Gulfport
Gulfport City officials are calling on the community to support rebuilding the jobs corps site.
The city is hosting a cookout to show the Department of Labor how much residents support rebuilding a new $30 million campus. The property was built back in 1954 and was originally used as a high school.
City officials want to redevelop the entire campus and use it to educate students in the area. Harrison County District 4 Supervisor Kent Jones said, “We’re hoping it will kind of bring back the community somewhat. We think it will probably if not the best one of the top two job corps in America and what it’s going to do, it’s just going to do wonders in the community. It’s going to bring a lot more students, a lot more faculty. So therefore more jobs, more business in the area so we’re just really looking forward to it.”
The cookout is free and open to the public on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 at the site on 20th Street. If you cannot attend, but still want to show your support you can sign the petition at Gulfport City Hall.
