Public safety forum in Gulfport

Gulfport police and the Gulfport Fire Department briefed a crowd this morning on public safety in the city.
Chief Leonard Papania focused on recruitment in the City of Gulfport. With dozens of officers eligible to retire in the next year, he wants to continue to promote a career in law enforcement. He also wants to create a substation on Highway 49 above I-10 to bring more attention in north Gulfport. Chief Mike Beyerstedt proudly spoke on the fire department’s involvement with rescue efforts in Texas and Florida.
Both chiefs agreed the City of Gulfport continues to grow economically which brings both positives and challenges to the first responders as well.
