Protect your pool in cold weather

The artic blast forecast for Mississippi hit the northern part of the state today. It’s expected to reach South Mississippi by early Tuesday morning.

We all know to protect the pipes, plants, and pets when the temperatures drop toward freezing, but did you know that also applies to pool pipes and pumps?

Not taking care of pool equipment can be a costly mistake if a hard freeze hits. Pam Carter with Backyard Paradise Pools says the safe bet is to run the pool pump until the weather warms again. “Most importantly, you want to make sure your pump is running during any freezing temperatures. You want to make sure your water features are turned on and there is water flowing. As long as there is water flowing through that system they cannot freeze and bust. And most importantly if you have a heater, the coils in those heaters are very small and those will be the first thing to break and the most expensive to replace.”

Carter says it is thousands of dollars to replace equipment that has frozen and burst so keep those pumps going.
