Project pitched for sand problem in Biloxi
Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich pitched a pilot project to help keep the sand off Highway 90 in Biloxi.
The pitch includes installing a pre-fabricated concrete boardwalk by sections from the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor to Kuhn Street. This small stretch would test the effectiveness of preventing sand from sweeping along Highway 90 before installing the rest throughout Biloxi. The interlocking ‘L’ shaped segments would be installed from the fifth step of the nine step seawall, creating a ten foot concrete walkway.
City officials tell News 25 Biloxi spends nearly half a million dollars every year removing the sand so it is time for a change. Vincent Creel with City of Biloxi Public Affairs said, “He thinks it will come in somewhere around $300 a foot range. The beauty of it is you can do it pretty quickly because it’s pre-fabricated and it’s in section. You lay down a section, you go to the next section, you lay down the next section. Something that can be done quick, relatively inexpensively, and it would reduce this cost that we have every year of having to pick up sand.”
There is no time table set for this demo project, but Mayor Gilich has scheduled meetings to continue his efforts moving forward with this boardwalk.
