Proclaiming April as Child Abuse Awareness Month

Across Jackson County, proclamations were issued in each coastal city declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month.

In a council meeting, Gautier Mayor Casey Vaughan and the City of Gautier signed the proclamation and handed it to a CASA representative.

CASA is pushing for more volunteers and advocates to help meet their 100 percent goal of advocate per child.

Last year, they were only able to provide an advocate for 93 percent of children who came through the youth court system. Jackson County CASA Board Member Tonya Fowler said, “We want to make sure that we get this information out there to all of our citizens to keep the eye out, looking, and helping for child abuse and neglect and to get that reported as quickly as possible. We’re always, always searching for volunteers. We just do not have enough.”

CASA is asking everyone to wear blue tomorrow and each Wednesday in April in solidarity with Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month.
