Process for Concealed Carry Permit
In 2013, Mississippi had less than 64,000 residents with concealed carry permits. Over the past couple of years that number has increased rapidly. But what exactly is the process to get a concealed carry permit here in Mississippi? News 25’s Kristen Durand breaks it down for us.
San Bernardino, the Planned Parenthood shooting, not to mention the shooting death of a Waffle House employee killed on the job. Recent shootings have led to widespread fear throughout the country and more Americans wanting a gun of their own. Owner of Gun Ho Indoor Shooting Range Roger Caplinger said, “Unfortunately, if you’re waiting on the police, you’re going to be a victim. I think people understand that and I think they understand also that San Bernardino is probably the beginning of things to come, not necessarily the end.”
The process for a basic concealed carry permit in Mississippi is simple, with no training required. An FBI background check, two forms of valid identification, just over $100 in fees and a completed application, then you wait. Corporal Benjamin Seibert with Mississippi Highway Patrol said, “In that 45 day waiting period, we’re going to take your fingerprints and we’re actually going to check through FBI databases to make sure that you haven’t committed any serious crimes.”
If you have your concealed carry permit in Mississippi, you’d be able to take your gun into places like the local supermarket or convenience store, as long as there is no sign on the door that says no weapons allowed. If you wanted a wider range of places to take your gun into, you’d have to get an enhanced carry endorsement to the permit that does require training. “It’s a pretty involved course. It’s four hours worth of classroom and four hours worth of actual shooting time,” said Caplinger.
What if you own a gun and don’t have a concealed carry permit? Thanks to the new suitcase law, you can have your weapon with you, just not on you. “What that means is you can keep a weapon concealed in a satchel, fanny pack, purse or book bag, as long as it can be separated from the person,” said Seibert.
Enhanced carry permits give you access to locations that a regular concealed carry does not, such as state and local government buildings and then state and certain local government functions.
