Prescribed burn today at MS Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge

If you see smoke in the Ocean Springs area today, it is because the fish and wildlife service is conducting a prescribed burn at the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge.

The burn site is 362 acres located west of Seaman Road and north of I-10 in Ocean Springs. The fires help officials restore the native wet pine Savannah and the habitat of the critically endangered Mississippi Sandhill Crane and Dusky Gopher Frog.

Recent rains have made burning much safer and weather conditions favor smoke dispersal today.
