Preparing residents for hurricane season with mitigation strategies

Hurricane season is less than a month away. Smart Home America out of Mobile was in Pass Christian to talk with residents about ways to fortify their homes.

It was a chance to learn about fortified construction, a higher level of standard that can reduce the risk of water entering your home by 95 percent. It also nearly doubles the roof’s strength.

During the 2020 hurricane season, approximately 95 percent of the nearly 17,000 fortified homes impacted from storms that year experienced little to no damage and had no insurance claims based on preliminary data. Susan Putnam said, “We have a tendency to get strong storms down here on the Coast. If we begin to build smarter and better, we can hopefully offset any damage that is a result of those storms. So, they will be built to last.”
