Predicting the Hattiesburg Regional: USM fans calling their shots

On the diamond, opening day is the time for wishful thinking, even if those thoughts are a little bit out of left field. For Southern Miss, the prospect of hosting a regional wasn’t that farfetched, but there was still a lot of baseball left to be played.
After all, the Golden Eagles probably would have gotten the chance to host last year had it not been for getting swept at FIU on the last weekend of the regular season. That being said, those loyal to the Black and Gold have always been a confident bunch, so last year’s disappointment certainly didn’t last forever.
Back on February 17th, News 25 caught up with some of the USM faithful before the first game of the season and let’s not forget who said it first. Southern Miss fan John Adams said, “I don’t want to say too much and jinx it, but I really do. I think we’ll have a really good season. We’ve got some really good players. This is the most excited I’ve seen people in a while. Usually coming into it you’re kind of going well, we don’t know what we’ve got. This year, we’re really excited about it.”
Southern Miss fan Ben Waddle said, “Omaha is definitely in the discussion. The regional is just getting our feet wet, we’re going to go to the supers this year. Hopefully host a little bit. I feel like we got snubbed after that conference tournament, we should have hosted. I know we wouldn’t have empty seats like Florida State did, but we’ll definitely host a regional this year. It’s going to be a great year, and we’re going to be the proton.”
Today, Southern Miss athletics announced the Hattiesburg regional has already sold out.
