PRCC football working towards breakout 2022 season

In football, they call third down the money down and the same rule applies to Seth Smith’s third year at Pearl River where the Wildcats are finally ready to take all their hard work and make a deposit.

PRCC coming off a pair of two-win seasons to start the Coach Smith era, but it wasn’t all bad for the Wildcats who led the state in rushing both years, which is hardly a surprise considering Smith’s track record during his time at East Central High School.

This season, Pearl River is bringing in a pair of transfer quarterbacks to improve the passing game and just a more experienced group overall featuring ten redshirt freshmen and 31 sophomores, including Picayune alum Elijah Jenkins. Coach Smith said, “Yeah, you’re bringing up record. I can handle it. It is what it is. If we were working like our record, we’d be out there probably just doing bear crawls right now. But yeah, these kids have a great attitude. They’ve worked hard. And honestly, since day one, these kids have done what we’ve asked. I know I’m beating a dead horse, but really, we’re just ready for Thursday to hurry up and get here and just kind of see what the fruits of our labor look like.”

Jenkins said, “Redemption, man. And just bringing something to Poplarville that needed to be for years and years and after. Changing the program around and having a new era and bringing a new culture to Poplarville, Mississippi, which is earned for the people, the fans and everybody that’s been a Wildcat alumni, just bringing it back, man. It’s bigger than us. It’s bigger than the coaches, bigger than the players, man. This is for the city. This is for the school itself. It’s just bigger than us.”

The Wildcats open up their 2022 campaign at 7 p.m. Thursday at home against Holmes, who they beat by 48 points on homecoming last year.
