Power Five trio signs from Biloxi
Biloxi High School is always a repeat offender when it comes to some of the bigger signing day ceremonies on the Gulf Coast even if it is only December.
But Wednesday’s class of 2020 now holds an extra special place in Big Red history as the very first one to ever feature a trio of power five signees on the same day.
Overall, the Indians had four student-athletes put pen to paper this afternoon, those being Arizona State signee Colten Keith for baseball, Georgia Tech signee Ryan Spiers for football, another Georgia Tech signee Cameron O’Neal for track and field, and Pearl River Community College signee Aubrey Edwards for girls soccer.
As for the big three, Keith is an All-American third baseman, hailing from Arizona, that led the Indians in batting average, runs, hits, RBI, doubles, triples, and home runs, so everything.
Now the first Georgia Tech commitment came from Spiers, a three-star offensive lineman, according to 24/7 Sports, who says he picked the Yellowjackets over about seven or eight other Division I offers.
And then there’s O’Neal, the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year for Mississippi, and state champion long jumper for Class 6A, ready to make his friend’s acquaintance in Atlanta. Keith said, “It’s just a great honor to be able to commit to my dream school. Always wanted to go there. Since I was a little kid I’ve always loved ASU baseball, big history in that program, so I was really looking forward to getting there in June.”
O’Neal said, “It was surreal. Like I grew up watching, looking at these schools on TV. And then I look in the mail, and then I see their logo on an envelope. It was just – the recruitment process was fun.”
Spiers said, “Hard work beats talent any day. That’s what I always live by. I had to work my butt off to get to where I am today, and we’ve got a lot of guys that can do the same thing here. So hopefully we have more next year than we did this year.”
Now Keith will have yet another big decision to make this summer, depending on where he gets taken in the MLB first year player draft. He tells News 25 “whatever happens happens.”
