Potential games at MGM Park will not be played on Saturday, Sunday
The Biloxi Shuckers and MGM Park were set to host potential Southern League playoff games this weekend, but Pensacola secured the league’s Co-Championship wrapping up a three-game sweep of Jacksonville on Friday afternoon.
The site change would have been necessary as Hurricane Irma tracks its way through the Atlantic Ocean with a projected weekend landfall in Florida. MGM Park would have served as the home venue for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. The Jacksonville squad will still travel to Biloxi and stay on the Mississippi Gulf Coast until it is safe to return to Jacksonville.
The Shuckers will be collecting supplies throughout next week at the Shuckers front office. Items that are being collected would include diapers, new socks, baby formula, non-perishable food, work gloves, water, new bedding, flashlights and toiletries.
On Wednesday, due to the uncertainty of Hurricane Irma, the Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announced that MGM Park in Biloxi would host potential playoff games and that the 2017 BC® Powder Southern League Championship Series had been canceled. Each of the winners of the best-of-five North and South Division Series will be declared Co-Champions for the 2017 Southern League season.
“With an abundance of caution, I have made the hard decision to cancel our Championship Series,” stated League President Lori Webb. “Due to concerns for our players’ safety, coupled with potential shortages of gas, hotel rooms and other items that may hinder the many evacuees leaving the affected area, it seemed like the right thing to do. As this storm passes through, I hope for the best to all those in harm’s way.”
