Port City Sounders brace for marquee adult soccer game on the Coast

For Port City FC it’s been a quick rise to the top of the Gulf Coast Premier League in its first season calling Gulfport home.

On Thursday, the Sounders take on Motagua out of New Orleans in the GCPL semi-finals following their first round bye as the two seed.

The rest of the league could only watch as Port City ripped off five straight wins to close out the regular season. They finished with an overall record of 8-1-1.

The Sounders now brace for one of the biggest adult soccer games ever played on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with the chance to add on to their already growing legacy as one of the hottest new attractions in town. Port City head coach Henrik Madsen said, “Yeah, well, and I think it was one of the things that we set out for from the beginning was to create something that was very exciting for our young players to come out and watch. And I think as the season has gone on more kids have come out and watched and I think it’s starting to catch a little bit of attention that hey, it’s actually fun to come out and watch these college guys and these older guys play some entertaining soccer so I think it’s starting to do what we kind of set out to do which was to create something for our young kids to come out and watch.”

Coach Madsen says there are already plans in the works to form a women’s semi-professional team starting next season.

The two-seed Sounders and three-seed Motagua will kick things off at 7 p.m. on Thursday from Gulfport High’s Herbert Wilson Stadium.
