Port City FC on the rise
Without the U.S. Men’s National Team representing the stars and stripes in this year’s World Cup, you might be looking for somewhere else to get your American soccer fix. Paging Port City FC.
So far, so good for the Sounders in their first season in Gulfport, considering they’re in first place six games into the season.
Port City is coming off a 3-1 victory over Mobile AFC and leads the Gulf Coast Premier League with just ten goals allowed.
Early success is already turning the team into a hometown favorite, especially in the absence of other ways for fans to express their World Cup soccer fever. Port City FC center midfielder Harrison Russell said, “Port City has done a really good job for the Coast with getting people out to watch some men’s soccer, something that the Coast was lacking until it came along. Getting the youth involved, and putting on a good show for everyone to come out and enjoy. It’s tough that the United States isn’t in the World Cup this year. There’s a lot of people that would like to be able to support them, but people are still watching and there are local games like this that they can get out to, to keep it on their mind.”
The Sounders return to action at 7 p.m. tomorrow versus Pensacola FC at Herbert Wilson Stadium.
