Players arrive for Conference USA Tournament
The Conference USA Baseball Tournament begins tomorrow morning at MGM Park in Biloxi. Eight teams, including Southern Miss, will play in a double elimination tournament.
The games begin Wednesday and a champion will be crowned on Sunday in Biloxi.
The final touches for the Conference USA Baseball Tournament are underway at MGM Park in Biloxi and the players have arrived on our Coast.
The top eight teams from C-USA are all hoping to dethrone Southern Miss as reigning champions. Florida International is one of them. Florida International Head Coach Mervyl Melendez said, “We all start at ground zero right now. Regardless of our record, we’re in the tournament. The best one that plays this tournament is usually the one that wins.”
Knowing what it takes to win is what some of the players from different teams say is what’s going to matter Wednesday when the tournament officially begins. “Gotta have a pitching staff that’s able to keep the runs off the board and with our offense, go ahead and score more than the other team.”
“We got to play together as a team and hopefully things will go our way.”
With the tournament being held for the first time ever at MGM Park, the Coast’s hotels and restaurants are sure to feel an economic impact. “Going to the Beau Rivage. My parents are there.”
“There’s casinos, there’s the beach, things to do on the beach.”
While we hope the Coast hits a home run with these teams, players tell News 25 they came here for one thing and that’s to keep their eye on the ball. “We came down here to do our business, try to win.”
“It’s a joy for us to be here, but there’s a job at hand and we’re here for strictly business.”
The games will begin Wednesday at 9 a.m. “Got to take one game at a time, but win the first, win the second, win the third, win the fourth and we’re champions.”
