Picayune residents celebrate MLK day with community celebration

We all know Martin Luther King Jr.’s most well-known line, “I have a dream.”

The community in Picayune paid tribute to the activist today by hosting a celebration for anyone and everyone to enjoy together.

“Martin Luther King had a dream,” said Eiram Magee, a young girl attending the parade. “and his dream was to have everyone united”

69 years ago, black and white children would not have stood in a neighborhood watching a parade – hands reaching for the same piece of candy.

But today they do because of leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. who envisioned this for them.

“He died for us,” said high schooler London Certain. “Really, he died for us, and without him, none of this would be happening.”

The parade is only the beginning of festivities to celebrate the achievements of Martin Luther King. The community is spending the entire day living his dream.

While Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream has become a reality, many feel there is more to accomplish.

“As human beings, it doesn’t matter what color or race you are, the dream has come,” said Pastor Jerry Brumfield. “But we yet have a long way to go, but we want to continue the life and legacy cause we don’t want the dream to die.”

Locals enjoyed the day together by attending a church service and laughing together at the table over lunch.
