Picayune RB Dante Dowdell receives 5A Mr. Football Award

Senior running back Dante Dowdell became the first-ever Picayune player to receive the Mr. Football Award for Class 5A, fresh off the Maroon Tide’s South State championship game victory over Gautier, in which Dowdell played his best game in the biggest game of the season.

The U.S. Army Bowl All-American posted a season high 241 yards and a career high five touchdowns on 26 carries.

Dowdell has been a bell cow all year long for the Tide, currently just shy of 2,000 yards with 28 touchdowns on more than eight yards per carry.

A former News 25 Student Athlete of the Week, Dowdell is committed to Oregon and was also picked to play in the MS-AL All-Star Game. “Individually, I mean I’m pretty good but as a team we’re great. We’re going to the state championship this week, and my team success helped my success. It feels good. I’m like the first person from my school to actually do this, so it feels good to accomplish this.”

You could certainly make the argument Dowdell should have won Mr. Football last year as well as the MVP of his team’s state championship game victory over West Point. As fate would have it, those two teams squaring off for the third time in four years for a gold ball at 7 p.m. Friday from the Rock.
