Petition to let residents vote on state flag change
A local man is protesting the referendum to remove the old Mississippi state flag. He believes the vote should have been made by the people.
Electrical estimator turned activist Ryan Woodcock is encouraging people to sign up as volunteers at letmsvote.com. “We’re promoting a referendum that we hope will raise enough volunteers to promote a petition to keep the state flag or give the people the right to vote to keep the flag or change the state flag, however people may feel.”
He fears for the worst with the removal of the state flag without giving people the ability to vote on it. “If they can do this with a flag they can do this with the United States flag. To quote Steven Palazzo “if they start tearing down Confederate statues where do we stop?”
While some argue that a state flag with a Confederate emblem on it is a sign of oppression, Woodcock says, “I could definitely see where it had been a sign of oppression a long time ago, but as the people evolve, the flag that represents those people evolves too.”
Letmsvote.com is paid for by ‘Let Mississippi Vote.’ They will start the ballot initiative when they reach 5,000 volunteers. “I’ve never been the kind of guy to fly flags, but this time I stepped up.”
