Pedestrian fleeing from traffic stop hit on I-10 near Canal Road

A pedestrian fleeing a traffic stop on Interstate 10 this morning was hit by a vehicle in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 at the 29 mile marker near Canal Road.
The incident happened about 10:30 a.m. this morning.
Sheriff Troy Peterson tells WXXV that a Hispanic driver and passenger were in a vehicle stopped on the interstate. Sheriff’s deputies found drugs and a gun in the vehicle and the passenger fled. Peterson said deputies believe the passenger was an illegal alien, which prompted him to run.
The passenger ran across the westbound traffic and was hit by a vehicle going eastbound. The victim appears to have non-life threatening injuries, Peterson said.
The driver is in custody.
Trooper Cal Robertson of the Mississippi Highway Patrol said the eastbound lanes are closed while a helicopter lands to take the victim to a hospital.
Westbound lanes are open.
