Pedestrian Hit and Killed in Gulfport
Tonight on Highway 49, just south of the I-10 overpass, a pedestrian was hit and killed by a patrol vehicle from Gulfport Police Department. Details are still limited at this time.
Dozens of emergency response vehicles flood Highway 49 in Gulfport as traffic is completely blocked off in both the north and southbound lanes. This comes just minutes after a pedestrian is struck and killed by a police car with multiple eye witnesses at the scene to watch the tragedy unfold. One Gulfport Police Department official said, “A Gulfport police officer was involved in a crash with a pedestrian. We have contacted the District Attorney’s Office and at the request of the District Attorney’s Office, Biloxi Police Department and Coroner Gary Hargrove will be investigating.”
Witnesses at the scene tell News 25 the man was just inside of an Arby’s, where he ordered a meal and then attempted to cross the street. He was struck and killed by a marked vehicle from the Gulfport Police Department. A witness said, “I’m looking right out of the window and he just strikes him going like 70 miles per hour. They didn’t have the flashers on and he just ordered a big ol’ meal and walked out, looked both ways and next thing you know, the police just hit him with the car.”
The identity of the pedestrian was not released at the time of the accident, but with Biloxi Police Department leading the investigation alongside Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove, additional details will follow.
