Pearl River community college softball and baseball programs eyeing the start of their season

Pearl River community college is no stranger to success on the softball and baseball diamond.

in 2022 the baseball team took home the programs first national championship – and last season racked up a 45-13 record. Their recent success has them ranked No. 3 in the first NCJAA baseball rankings of the year.

“Opening day, at any level, is just a special day,” said head baseball coach Michael Avalon. “It’s what all these guys…it’s what we work on all year long. That is the thing about baseball at the college level that is different – we start in August so this is a long time coming. Again, it’s just one of those special days of the year. If you are a baseball player it’s Christmas.”

On the softball side of things – last season was also a huge win. 43 of them.

The lady Wildcats accomplished program history by going undefeated at home for the first time ever. Their success last season has them ranked 6th in the first NCJAA softball ranking of the year.

“Culture is probably the most important thing we have built this foundation on,” said head softball coach Christie Meeks. “We are here to support every team that is on our campus and build each other up, you know, it’s more important for the person beside me to succeed that just for me to succeed.”

The softball team will open up their season on the road this weekend while they baseball team will have to wait until next Tuesday to throw out the opening pitch.
