Peaceful protest in Harrison County against Confederate Memorial Day
Some groups believe their tax money should not go toward a holiday they say commemorates a government that wanted to maintain slavery and white supremacy.
Over a dozen people of all races and ages marched around the Harrison County Courthouse chanting for change. The courthouse, like many other federal buildings, was closed in observance of Confederate Memorial Day.
The group, led by Mississippi Rising Coalition founder Lea Campbell, wants to see Mississippi stop pushing what they call a harmful and unjust ideology.
The Mississippi Rising Coalition marched around the courthouse and chanted things like “take it down” in reference to Mississippi’s state flag which showcases the Confederate battle emblem.
