Pathways 2 Possibilities Career Expo
Did you know what you wanted to do when you grew up when you were in the eighth grade? Most of us didn’t. News 25’s Katarina Luketich brings us to a huge career expo going on today and tomorrow for eighth graders to explore career opportunities.
Rollovers, surgery, and robots, those were just a few of the things South Mississippi eighth graders got to experience at Pathways 2 Possibilities, an interactive career expo where students get to explore the options around them. Organizer Paige Roberts said, “It may be a different path for you than for me but there is a path and we just need to discover it.”
For the next two days, over 6,000 eighth graders from all across South Mississippi will flood the coliseum to learn about those different paths. From seeing what law enforcement officials do to practicing medicine, the point of Pathways 2 Possibilities is to give students a variety of options to see something that might attract them.
Some already have an idea of what they want to do in the future. Others are unsure and Pathways 2 Possibilities gives them a chance to see if something sparks their interest. Ocean Springs Middle School eighth grader Sydney Kulo said, “The difference between everything is large, so seeing what they love to do and do it every day. I want to figure out what I want to do.”
And although Sydney doesn’t have to decide anytime soon, this is a good opportunity for students like her to start thinking in these terms. “It communicates relevance to students so that they can see what’s beyond the classroom, that there actually is a purpose for sitting in geometry or sitting in Biology and that it can lead to a paycheck,” said Roberts.
The third annual Pathways 2 Possibilities wraps up tomorrow. The event has been so successful here on the Coast they’ve expanded to North Mississippi as well.
