Pass Christian locals express their opinions over concrete boardwalk along Hwy-90

On Tuesday evening at the Pass Christian City Hall, officials allowed locals residents to voice their opinions concerning the construction of the concrete boardwalk along Highway-90, a matter which has residents in Pass Christian divided.

Just recently a vote was passed halting the construction of the last three phases of the boardwalks construction along Highway 90, after some residents expressed concerns over the project. Those opposed believed that the knee wall that would be erected along the boardwalk would block views of the beach.

However many in Pass Christian believe that the boardwalk, funded by GOMESA, would be highly beneficial and finally provide safe passage for pedestrians along highway 90, help with sand cleanup cost, as well as help prevent future hurricane damage. Many of those residents voiced their opinions at Tuesdays meeting, attempting to show that support for the project does exist within the community.

“We’re wanting to let folks know that there’s a lot of us in support of it. I think it’s a great plan. I walk and ride my bike along the boardwalk, I’ve tried it over in Waveland where they’ve got the wide walk and I think ours is going to be great. I think the wall is going to be even easier for the bulldozers to move the sand away from it and the stairs they’ve got going down there now,” spoke one local resident, Porter Pryor.

Pass Christian Mayor, Jimmy Rafferty, expressed why he believes it is so important to understand the differing opinions of residents concerning the boardwalk.

“What we’re hoping to do is get both sides of the initiative because we have a lot of support for this, because it would be a great thing for generations to come. It would be a much safer passageway, that’s the number one issue here is safety because right now we have pockets here in Pass Christian where it’s very, very unsafe to travel along the beach wall.

No further decisions were made concerning the boardwalk’s construction Tuesday evening, but we will continue to keep you updated with any of its further developments.
