Pass Christian Elementary School election time

The November 6th general election is still three weeks away, but some second graders at Pass Christian Elementary School have already cast their ballots, making informed choices before going to the polls at their mock election.

They looked a little young, but these second graders at Pass Christian Elementary School passed the careful screening of dedicated poll workers and were able to cast their ballots in Tuesday’s election. Students like Samuel King made their mark by voting for their favored candidates as they will appear on Mississippi’s November 6th general election ballot. Pass Christian Elementary teacher Julie Sellier said, “First we condensed a voter registration form. Then we made voter I.D. Cards that they have to show in order to vote. Then we went over all the candidates.”

Armed with signs, the second graders had their minds made up before they went to the polls thanks to their teacher Ms. Sellier who made sure they were informed and ready for Election Day. Student Samuel King said, “She told us our address and stuff like that and what our date of birth was. She walked us through the steps.”

“I used to go to the polls with my parents, so that’s why it’s so important. I would go every time there was an election. I was involved with that. I was a poll worker. I just feel it’s so important for our children to know about that,” said Sellier.

A lot of work went into casting these ballots. Teachers spent the last three weeks in the classroom getting the students ready for the mock election. “Through the Secretary of State’s Office they are having ‘Promote the Vote’ so we are participating in the mock election for the students. It’s throughout the state of Mississippi,” said Sellier.

With a helping hand from her own mother, Ms. Sellier will tally up the students’ votes and send the results to the Secretary of State’s Office by Friday to be combined with other schools’ Promote the Vote election results. Once the final tally is in, Ms. Sellier will share the outcome with these students.

In the meantime, they’ll have to wait for the results just like on a real election day.
