Pass Christian Development
One of the smallest towns along the Coast has made a remarkable comeback after nearly being wiped off the map by Hurricane Katrina.
Twelve years after Hurricane Katrina, cement slabs and empty lots along the beach where houses once stood continue to show the scars. However, Pass Christian has continued to grow since Katrina forced many people to move. You can see this all by the construction and development. Mayor Chipper McDermott said, “We tell people all the time what we have now, everything we have now, is better than we had before. We just don’t have as much of it. Now, I wouldn’t want to swap the things that we had, but what we do have now is better than what we had before and the other towns do to. Infrastructure is new.”
Pass Christian is referred to as the ground zero of Hurricane Katrina and that’s just because of the devastating storm surge they saw in the area, but that didn’t stop people from redeveloping in this beach front community.
That was the case for Jourdan Nicaud, owner of Hotel Pass Christian. He wanted to bring the new hotel, along with a spa and gym, to the area in order to build up his community and bring in people from all across the country. “Mississippi by itself is the hospitality state and that’s kind of what we wanted our hotel to be something, you know, I want it to be a second home for people from New Orleans, from everywhere who come down here to see it.”
Construction in the downtown area continues as a new drug store is expected to open this year.
