Pascagoula shines a light for organ donation

Tonight, Pascagoula and Singing River Hospital held a ceremony to shed a light on the importance of organ donation.

Mayor Dane Maxwell, along with officials from Singing River Health System and the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency, gathered at the Round Island Lighthouse in Pascagoula to light the city in blue and green, the theme colors for Donate Life Month across the nation.

According to MORA, there are 121,000 people in the United States currently waiting for a transplant, with about 1,500 Mississippians on the list.

Sonny Soileau with MORA tells News 25 that nearly 22 people die each day across the nation while waiting for a transplant.

Tomorrow hospitals across the nation will allow their staff to wear blue and green in honor of organ and tissue donors.
