Pascagoula Names Mar. 13th Senquez Golson Day

Friday the 13th usually has a negative aspect attached to it, but Friday, it was being celebrated as one local football star returned home.

SEC Defensive Player of the Year, First Team all American, and All SEC First Team honors are just a few of the awards Senquez Golson racked up during his tenure as an Ole Miss cornerback. While he has been fearless on the field, the turnout of support in his hometown has left him speechless. Golson says, "I’m still trying to take it in because I knew they were going to have an event, but I didn’t think it was going to be like this, so it’s definitely a blessing."

A three sport letterman in high school, Golson feels like it was just yesterday he was suiting up for the Panthers. He says, "Everything has just been happening so fast. It just felt like I was graduating from this place and now I’m back getting ready to graduate college and everything has been happening so fast. I’m just, I’m just trying to slow it down and take it day by day."

That’s a tough task for any NFL hopeful as they prepare for the biggest night of their lives: the NFL draft. That’s where Golson’s home town of Pascagoula comes into play, helping him take his mind off of football while showing their support. Brenda Simkins, Councilwoman at Large, says, "He’s able to come visit with his family who are all very supportive of him and his mother actually works for the school district, so it was quite successful."

Golson hopes he can carry that success with him to the next level. While Friday, he was given a key to the city, there is no question he already had the key to the hearts of its people. Golson also threw out the first pitch for the Dixie Youth opening ceremonies Saturday morning.
