Pascagoula mayor and council members tour city
The City of Pascagoula’s new administration took a tour Wednesday of some of the cities ongoing projects. The tour made multiple stops along the way to give the new group a chance to discuss what to do next.
Pascagoula City Council members and newly elected Mayor Dane Maxwell teamed up for a field trip Wednesday, taking to the city streets and parks to get a fresh look at city projects in a new light. Mayor Dane Maxwell said, “I learned so much today, going around doing this tour. It gives me a clear 30,000 foot view of everything in the city now and I think that all of the council folks just absolutely learned a lot.”
There was plenty of opportunity for that, considering the number of stops along the way during the two hour tour. “I actually saw some parts of the city today that I hadn’t seen in 40 years. It gave us some ideas on where to expand and where not to expand and what we need to do on drainage issues and how some of these connect together,” said Mayor Maxwell.
Council members and the mayor stopped at a lot of parks around the city, one being Lighthouse Park where they talked about adding a dog park, kayak dock, and even more space for live entertainment. Pascagoula Parks and Rec Director Darcie Crew said, “We have a lot of project ideas for parks, existing parks, adding to parks, complete renovations of parks and that kind of thing and that includes amenities that we are hearing from our citizens that they want, upgrading lighting and that kind of thing just for security and safety.”
Mayor Maxwell says Pascagoula residents should be on the lookout for some big changes on the horizon. “They are going to see some investments coming in, big, large investments and quite a few small ones. We also have a plan to start beautifying the city and start cleaning up some of these properties and ultimately we are working on a big complex issue that we are at with Market Street, you know that’s a big deal here in the city.”
Although city leaders are still looking for the money to begin work on Market Street, Mayor Maxwell says getting a firsthand look at these projects and works in progress is a progressive step toward laying the groundwork to see major city projects come to fruition.
