Oyster setting facility project phase one is underway

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is in phase 1 of its remote oyster setting facility project.

The purpose of the project is to support the restoration and protection of natural resources, ecosystems, habitats, beaches, and coastal wetlands of the Mississippi Gulf Coast region.

In phase one of the project, a small-scale site to grow oysters from the larvae stage was set up at the Port of Gulfport where there were optimal water conditions.

MDMR acquired a total of 98 million eyed larvae from the University of Southern Mississippi and Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory.
