Oyster relay at the Pascagoula Causeway Reef
An MDMR oyster relay kicked off at sunrise this morning in Pascagoula.
Fishermen were seen out bright and early working hard to get their supplies together to get out onto the water. MDMR provided the fishermen with sacks for the oysters to those who registered.
This relay will last three days or until they meet a quota of 18,000 plus sacks. The single trip limit is 20 sacks, but with no daily limit of how many times you can enter the sound.
News 25 spoke with some of the fishermen who said they are hoping this relay will be open for a while so they will have a good harvest. Fisherman Earl Ryan said, “This is the only chance we have to make any money in probably the last two or three years is to move these oysters. We were supposed to do this back in the summer, but then they decided not to move them. So, we’re just glad to be moving the oysters now so that we can make a little bit of money.”
All harvesting will cease by 3 p.m. each day.
