Organizations helping those who are food insecure on the Gulf Coast

From the Delta all the way to our beautiful Gulf Coast, Extra Table is delivering thousands of turkeys to local food pantries.

The middle of November is here and Thanksgiving season is kicking into high gear. Although many are looking forward to the holiday season, it can be a very challenging season for some as well.

With the high cost of food and other essentials, some are worried not just about their Thanksgiving meal, but where their next meal will come from.

Extra Table is a nonprofit organization committed to ending hunger by providing food pantries and soup kitchens with new and healthy food they need to feed the hungry in their community. Extra Table Development Director Rhonda Hayden said, “Today’s all about helping feed those people in Mississippi that are experiencing food insecurity, and Extra Table has partnered with the first bank to provide turkeys statewide to our partner pantries.”

The Extra Table’s Tackle Hunger campaign will deliver 3,000 turkeys this year to food pantries in Mississippi.

Now that you know how Extra Table is helping others this holiday season, WXXV visited Feed my Sheep to see how you can help others too.

Feed my Sheep is a non-judgmental faith-based program dedicated to providing nourishment to the homeless, homebound, and needy in the Gulfport area. Feed my Sheep Executive Director David Lion said, “We’re doing around 600 meals a day now, so the 325 delivered meals every morning, then about another 300 at lunch time, usually on Thanksgiving, we get an extra bump on that, plus it’s the end of the month and the crowds usually get a little bit bigger as the month goes on just because people are having a tough time trying to make the ends meet.”

There are two different ways you can get involved with Feed my Sheep. You can either donate and help support their mission financially or you can volunteer your time by preparing and/or serving the meals.
