Organ donor families honored in Ocean Springs

April is National Donate Life Month. Two organ donors’ legacies are living on through the patients they helped survive.
The families of those organ donors were honored by Singing River Health Systems during a special ceremony at the Ocean Springs Hospital. Family members and doctors who spoke were bringing awareness to how important organ donations are.
Twenty-six year-old Brittany DuVernay, whose organs were donated after she lost her life in September 2011, saved four patient’s lives. Brittany’s mother, Ellen DuVernay, tells News 25 she sees her daughter’s spirit in one of the donors Brittany’s organs went to. “We have since made contact with one of the donors and we are family. We stick together. We fly to Dallas. They fly here. We go back and forth. It’s just, I know Brittany lives on within these four people so I will do whatever I have to do to promote organ donation.”
The other organ donor saluted during the ceremony was Dr. Randall Hofbauer, whose organs helped save four patients.
