Opening school mass for the 2021-2022 school year

Today, Catholic school teachers and employees filled Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral in Biloxi for their opening school mass.

Praise and worship filled the hearts of many inside Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral in Biloxi as the bishop and many of the priests from the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi came together to host a celebratory opening school mass for the faculty and staff of catholic schools along the Coast. Father Lalo said, “We are expecting that hopefully we have a safe return, especially we hope that the parents, the family, the community, they continue supporting us, this ministry. We hope that the children, the students will have a good and a great school year.”

The Catholic Diocese consists of 15 Catholic schools here along the Coast and the opening mass ceremony is a way to pray for prosperity and a successful school year. Resurrection Catholic Middle and High School Principal Kristal Sisson said, “It’s important that we gather together as a school family and worship and continue to gather together and come together as children of God and start our year on a positive and exciting note.”

Teachers, faculty, and administrators play a key role in the success of students within the schools, but priests also play a vital role within the catholic schools. “They come in and celebrate mass for our students and staff. They are in our classrooms daily, instructing our students and helping us to form intentional disciples of Jesus Christ.”

Principal Sisson says that although masks will not be required this year, all the catholic schools will still be taking safety precautions. “When students are closer than three feet, some principals will require masks and so continuing to keep safety and health in our buildings, keeping our buildings sanitized. None of those things are going to change. We are going to keep our students and staff safe.”
