One mile nature trail opens in Ocean Springs

Ocean Springs residents and those across the Coast will now be able to enjoy another nature trail.

‘The Overlook’ is a mile-long looping trail tucked away behind Keg and Barrel on Highway 90 in Ocean Springs.

On the trail, there is a raised boardwalk that overlooks Old Fort Bayou and an outdoor classroom.

This trail has been in the works since 2019. The Land Trust for Mississippi Coastal Plain and Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality worked together to make this happen. MDEQ provided some of the funding necessary for the trail as well.

Between 2019 and today, locals have helped craft this trail into something special to the town. Land Trust for Mississippi Coastal Plain Executive Director Sara Guice said, “We really wanted to get the communities involvement in every step of the way of planning. That’s why we, through this grant funding, had the WaterShed team, which helped direct this particular trail and Overlook. And the community helped us name the project, which is “The Overlook at Old Fort Bayou” and helped us pick the quotes that you’ll find hidden along the way on the trail.”

Ocean Springs Mayor Kenny Holloway says more outdoor projects are in the works.
