One Flag for All Coalition Collects Signatures

Coast residents remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy weren’t the only ones hitting the streets for this morning’s march.
Representatives from the One Flag for All Coalition were marching, as well as collecting signatures at MGM Park when the parade ended. Signatures collected would be in support of ballot Initiative 55 or the Flag for all Mississippians Act. The initiative would amend the Mississippi State Constitution and remove any mention of the Confederacy from the state flag.
Supporters say that Mississippians fighting for a change in the flag falls right in line with what Dr. King stood for. Coordinator for Gulf Coast Coalition with Flag for All Mississippians Coalition Lea Campbell said, “Dr. King’s message was all about unity and equality. We feel that Mississippi needs a flag that represents those same values of unity and equality. The current flag for many people is a symbol of division and inequality. We think it’s time for Mississippi to move forward and remove the Confederate symbol from the flag.”
The One Flag for All Mississippians Coalition recorded signatures from Coast residents from Jackson, Harrison and other Coast counties.
