Omega Psi Phi members participate in Community Service Day
The 87th annual Seventh District meeting for members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated began in Biloxi. Over 1,000 members have come to the Coast.
A crusade of cars lined the intersection of Division and Lee Street for one of several service projects by members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated to assist the community. This one in particular was a food giveaway. Miss Melanie said, “Good thing that they give out food because food is so expensive now and it helps a lot of people. Any time you see a group of men doing something. It’s a great thing.”
The mobile food giveaway was in partnership with Feeding the Gulf Coast and the Kroc Center, giving away over 62,000 pounds of fresh produce and food.
Fraternity members were spread across the Biloxi area doing service projects, including constructing a community garden at St. John AME Church and assisting in STEM educational outreach in D’Iberville. Tammy Roberts and Sharon Mason said, “Economics is so bad now. Yeah, it’s hard to make ends meet. So, when you see this going on, you have to get line and it gives you a reason to get up every day and make yourself better.”
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Iota Upsilon Chapter member Corey Watts said, “Lifting up anybody that’s downtrodden to make because that’s what we do. We’re friendly. You’ll see us cooking out, hanging out and trying to be the best friend we can be to each other and to mankind and if we can help somebody, our living is not in vain.”
In addition, Omega Psi Phi will fund financial support to various nonprofits and schools across the Coast in line with their national programs.
