OLLI Students Attend Climate Change Seminar

USM’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is geared towards people 50 and older who want to continue their education in various subjects.
Today a group of  students learned the science behind why climate change is happening, the effects of those changes, and what is predicted to happen in the future. It’s just one of many classes offered through the  program.
Dr. Bill Curtis from the Citizens Climate Lobby was leading the class. He says the Gulf Coast is very vulnerable to sea level rise and there’s enough carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to cause sea levels to rise from three to seven feet between now and the year 2100 which could cause long-term damage to the Coast. “We’ll see areas like Bay St. Louis, Waveland with 50 percent or more of their land underwater. The City of Pascagoula, for example, the Chevron Plant and their tank form will be under a couple of feet of water by the end of the century. The only thing we can do to slow down climate change is to reduce our carbon monoxide emissions and that’s something we’ve got to rely on congress to do and our president to do,” said Dr. Curtis.
