Oldest known WWII veteran dies at 112

The oldest World War II veteran has died today at the age of 112.

Lawrence Brooks had just celebrated his birthday in September.

He was born in Norwood, Louisiana in 1909 as one of 15 children.

Brooks moved to New Orleans before being drafted into the Army in 1940. After the war, Brooks worked as a forklift operator until retiring in his 70s.

The veteran served in the predominately Black 91st Engineer Battalion and is survived by five children, 13 grandchildren and dozens of great-grandchildren.

The cause of death has not been released.
