Old Brick House in Biloxi undergoing renovations
One of the oldest buildings on the Mississippi Coast is receiving renovations that will help keep its lively history alive.
Old Brick House is one of the oldest buildings not just on the Coast, but in the entire state of Mississippi.
The building was originally built between 1835 and 1840 by William Rogers and was eventually sold to John L. Henley in 1872.
Henley had been active in the defense of Biloxi during the Civil War, and he served as the city’s mayor from 1866 to 1868.
After a series of owners, the City of Biloxi would eventually become the owner and operator of the historic building with restoration in 1950 and after Hurricane Katrina.
Old Brick House is now being renovated again to ensure this living history of Biloxi stays in peak condition.
Biloxi Historical Administrator Mandy Hornsby said, “The Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area has provided a matching grant for us to replace the roof first and then the mortar and brick joints. Old Brick House, besides our lighthouses, is one of our oldest structures in the City of Biloxi. It’s been a shop, a storage facility, it’s been a haunted house that kids tell stories about. So, it’s just a patch work of our cultural history that’s still physically there on the Back Bay.”
The inside of Old Brick House is currently closed, but is usually open for events such as weddings or garden parties.
