Officials cut the ribbon on new Fred Urie Pier in Gulfport
GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- Gulfport city leaders cut the ribbon on a rebuilt pier on the city’s waterfront.
The Fred Urie Pier was heavily damaged by Hurricane Zeta in 2020, which led to the demolition of the previous pier.
The city worked with FEMA on funding to build a new pier designed to withstand higher categories of hurricanes and wind surges.
Specific upgrades include the replacement of timber piles with concrete ones as well as stainless steel features that are more resistant to corrosion.
The reopening of the pier brings back a popular recreation spot for anglers and people enjoying the beach in Gulfport.
