Officials attend Katrina 20th anniversary memorial event in Gulfport

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- August 29, 2005: a day that so many of us will never forget.

It was 20 years ago on this day that Hurricane Katrina made landfall near Waveland, changing our coastal landscape and lives forever.

Today, many South Mississippi cities are marking the anniversary with memorial events.

Those events kicked off early this morning, with a remembrance ceremony at Jones Park in Gulfport.

Governor Tate Reeves, former Governor Haley Barbour, and U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard all gathered at the Barksdale Pavilion to talk about the recovery of our Coast in these past two decades.

This morning’s ceremony also featured musical performances and other speakers, who focused on our Coast’s amazing resiliency over the past two decades.
