Officer shot in north Harrison County

A Harrison County deputy is recovering after being shot in north Harrison County just before noon today.
The officer was parked in his patrol car near the intersection of Highway 605 and Highway 67 when a man walked up and shot him with a handgun. The suspect is described as a white man between 6 and 6’ 3”, weighing around 270 pounds. The deputy was airlifted to USA Medical Center in Mobile for treatment.
Authorities say he did not appear to be critically injured and credit the bullet proof vest he was wearing for saving his life.
Former Air Force Instructor David Willinger told News 25 about the importance and impact that wearing a bulletproof vest can have on a police officer when they are faced with this type of situation. “Normally what they wear most hand gun calibers will stop. They have a lot of protection from that, but now when you get to a hunting rifle then that’s probably not going to stop a hunting rifle, but with the small caliber handguns it would stop that. I have a firm belief in them and the police officers wearing them. I think that’s something that’s really good for them.”
No word on motive behind the shooting, but multiple agencies are still out in full force looking for the suspect.
