Officer dies in crash a day after graduating police academy

WAVELAND, Miss. (AP) — A weekend car crash killed a Mississippi police officer just a day after she graduated from the police academy, the city’s police chief said.

Chief Mike Prendergast’s post Sunday on the City of Waveland’s Facebook page said Katie Lynn Cash, 33, died over night Saturday.

Highway Patrol Cpl. Cal Robertson said in a press release that Cash was a passenger in a car that was involved in a crash on Highway 603 in Hancock County. Robertson said the 2021 Toyota Highlander driven by Angela James, 42, of Carriere was north on Highway 603 and had another passenger in addition to Cash, Marvin Larry Vanburen, 28, of Picayune.

Highway Patrol said the Highlander left the roadway to the left and overturned. The driver and occupants were not wearing seatbelts, Highway Patrol said. Cash suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene

Prendergast said she had graduated from the academy on Friday. Cash was the mother of two children.

MHP is investigating the crash.
